[Nursing Times] Therapeutic knitting as a strategy to reduce anxiety in nursing students

With high pressure and long hours, nursing is one of the most stressful professions out there. It’s not uncommon for these healthcare professionals to face burnout and mental health issues.

As a result, the nursing faculty from West Chester University in the U.S. (Mid-Atlantic region) established a knitting club to create knitted baby hats to be gifted to someone in need as part of a mental health initiative for nursing students.

Why knitting?

Knitting was chosen for its capacity to enhance fine motor skills and cognitive function, while also serving as a relaxing activity that supports mindfulness and stress reduction

The result?

Study participants, with or without prior knitting experience, reported noticeable reduced anxiety and enjoyed social and meaningful aspects of the activity.
