Celtic Plait Stitch

Celtic Plait stitch is a knitting stitch pattern that requires both twists and cables. This pattern is more advanced than most other stitches at Purl Avenue but once finished, it is absolutely gorgeous. The Celtic Plait stitch resembles designs most commonly used in the Celtic design work, hence the name. This stitch pattern was used in my Celtic Plait Coffee Cup Sleeve.

Pattern

Skill: experienced
Multiple of 24 sts

ROW 1 (RS): P2, C4B, (P4, C4B) twice, P2.
ROW 2: K2, P4, (K4, P4) twice, K2.
ROW 3: P1, T3B, (T4F, T4B) twice, T3F, P1.
ROW 4: K1, P2, K3, P4, K4, P4, K3, P2, K1.
ROW 5: T3B, P3, C4F, P4, C4F, P3, T3F.
ROW 6: P2, K4, (P4, K4) twice, P2.
ROW 7: K2, P3, T3B, T4F, T4B, T3F, P3, K2.
ROW 8: (P2, K3) twice, P4, (K3, P2) twice.
ROW 9: (K2, P3) twice, C4B, (P3, K2) twice.
ROW 10: repeat ROW 8.
ROW 11: K2, P3, T3F, T4B, T4F, T3B, P3, K2.
ROW 12: repeat ROW 6.
ROW 13: T3F, P3, C4F, P4, C4F, P3, T3B.
ROW 14: repeat ROW 4.
ROW 15: P1, T3F, (T4B, T4F) twice, T3B, P1.
ROW 16: repeat ROW 2.

Repeat ROWS 1-16.

Diagonal Rib Stitch

Diagonal rib pattern is another pattern that is simple to knit. Despite its simplicity, I haven’t seen it being used very often. This stitch pattern does not have intricate details which makes it perfect for larger projects such as afghans and scarves.

Skill: easy
Multiple of 4 sts.

Row 1 and 2: *K2, P2; rep from * to end.
Row 3 (RS): K1, *P2, K2; rep from * to last 3 sts, P2, K1.
Row 4: P1, *K2, P2; rep from * to last 3 sts, K2, P1.
Row 5 and 6: *P2, K2; rep from * to end.
Row 7: repeat Row 4.
Row 8: repeat Row 3.
Repeat Rows 1-8.

Basketweave Stitch

Basketweave pattern is an easy one which creates a design that looks like a basket, hence the name “basketweave.” This pattern is simple and is perfect for projects such as scarves and afghans.

Multiple of 8 sts + 3

Row 1 (RS): knit.
Row 2: K4, P3, *K5, P3; rep from * to last 4 sts, K4.
Row 3: P4, K3, *P5, K3; rep from * to last 4 sts, P4.
Row 4: repeat Row 2.
Row 5: knit.
Row 6: P3, *K5, P3; rep from * to end.

Rice Stitch

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Most of you probably have special plans for today, I don’t. I will be working ALL day today, but that’s okay (I’ll be making some moolah, haha). In celebration of this “holiday,” I made a failed attempt to try to somehow tie it into this week’s stitch pattern. I couldn’t really find any stitches that are heart-like or resembles anything related to Valentine’s Day so I decided to work off of last week’s stitch pattern, the broken rib stitch.

Rice Stitch is a stitch that is found on the reverse side of a broken rib stitch. Most people don’t know about the rice stitch (they only know it as “the beautiful reverse side of the broken rib stitch”). There are a couple of ways you can knit the rice stitch. The most obvious way is to knit the broken rib. Here is the second method:

Rice Stitch

Skill: easy

Row 1 (RS): P1, *K1 tbl, P1; rep from * to end.
Row 2: knit.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2.

Broken Rib Stitch

The broken rib stitch is often confused with the mistake rib stitch. Mistake rib produces a more dense pattern while the broken rib stitch is more subtle and not as elastic. This stitch pattern is perfect for blankets and afghans and can be done with both odd number and even number of stitches.

Row 2: knit.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2.

Even number of stitches:
Row 1: knit.

Moss Stitch
