Knitting Abbreviations

The following are common knitting abbreviations. Please note that knitting abbreviations and stitch techniques may differ according to different patterns.

C2B (Cross 2 Back)
Slip next st onto cable needle and hold at back of work, knit next st from left-hand needle, then knit st from cable needle.
C2BW (Cross 2 Back on Wrong Side)
Slip next st onto cable needle and hold at back (RS) of work, purl next st from left-hand needle, then purl st from cable needle.
C2F (Cross 2 Front)
Slip next st onto cable needle and hold at front of work, knit next st from left-hand needle, then knit st from cable needle.
C2FW (Cross 2 Front on Wrong Side)
Slip next st onto cable needle and hold at front (wrong side) of work, purl next st from left-hand needle, then purl st from cable needle.
C2PL (Cross 2 Purl Left)
Slip next st onto cable needle and hold at front (wrong side) of work, purl next st from left-hand needle, then purl st from cable needle.
C2PR (Cross 2 Purl Right)
Slip next st onto cable needle and hold at back (right side) of work, purl next st from left-hand needle, then purl st from cable needle.
C3B (Cross 3 Back)
Slip next st onto cable needle and hold at back of work, knit next 2 sts from left-hand needle, then knit st from cable needle.
C3F (Cross 3 Front)
Slip next 2 sts onto cable needle and hold at front of work, knit next st from left-hand needle, then knit 2 sts from cable needle.
C3L (Cable 3 Left)
Slip next st onto cable needle and hold at front of work, knit next 2 sts from left-hand needle, then knit st from cable needle.
C3R (Cable 3 Right)
Slip next 2 sts onto cable needle and hold at back of work, knit next st from left-hand needle, then knit 2 sts from cable needle.
C4B (Cable 4 Back)
Slip 2 sts onto cable needle and hold at back of work, knit next 2 sts from left-hand needle, then knit 2 sts from cable needle.
C4F (Cable 4 Front)
Slip next 2 sts onto cable needle and hold at front of work, knit next 2 sts from left-hand needle, then knit 2 sts from cable needle.
C4L (Cable 4 Left)
Slip 3 sts onto cable needle and hold at front of work, knit 1 st from left-hand needle, then knit 3 sts from cable needle.
C4R (Cable 4 Right)

Option 2: slip 1 st onto cable needle and hold at back of work, knit 4 sts from left-hand needle, then purl 1 st from cable needle.
C6 (Cross 6)
Slip 4 sts onto cable needle and hold at front of work, knit 2 sts from left-hand needle, then slip 2 sts from cable needle back to left-hand needle. Move cable needle with 2 remaining knit sts to back of work, purl 2 sts from left-hand needle, then knit 2 sts from cable needle.
C6B (Cable 6 Back)
Slip 3 sts onto cable needle and hold at back of work, knit 3 sts from left-hand needle, then knit 3 sts from cable needle.
C6F (Cable 6 Front)
Slip 3 sts onto cable needle and hold at front of work, knit 3 sts from left-hand needle, then knit 3 sts from cable needle.
C7B (Cable 7 Back)
Slip 4 sts onto cable needle and hold at back of work, knit 3 sts from left-hand needle, then knit 4 sts from cable needle.
C7F (Cable 7 Front)
Slip 4 sts onto cable needle and hold at front of work, knit 3 sts from left-hand needle, then knit 4 sts from cable needle.
C8B (Cable 8 Back)
Slip 4 sts onto cable needle and hold at back of work, knit 4 sts from left-hand needle, then knit 4 sts from cable needle.
C8F (Cable 8 Front)
Slip 4 sts onto cable needle and hold at front of work, knit 4 sts from left-hand needle, then knit 4 sts from cable needle.
C9B (Cable 9 Back)
Slip 4 sts onto cable needle and hold at back of work, knit 5 sts from left-hand needle, then knit 4 sts from cable needle.
C9F (Cable 9 Front)
Slip 5 sts onto cable needle and hold at front of work, knit 4 sts from left-hand needle, then knit 5 sts from cable needle.
C10B (Cable 10 Back)
Slip 5 sts onto cable needle and hold at back of work, knit 5 sts from left-hand needle, then knit 5 sts from cable needle.

C12B (Cable 12 Back)

inc=increase/increasing

K

k=knit
K1B (Knit 1 Below)=insert needle into st below the next st on left-hand needle and knit it in the usual way, slipping the st above off needle at same time.
Kfb (Knit Front and Back)=make a knit stitch, don’t slide stitch off the left-hand needle. You now have one stitch on the right-hand needle and the old stitch still on the left-hand needle. Go in and knit through the back loop of the stitch on the left-hand needle.

L

LT (Left Twist)=on the right side, knit through the back loop (ktbl) of the second stitch, leaving stitch on the left needle. K2tog through the back loops (tbl) of the first and second stitch. Slide both stitches off the left needle.

M

M1 (Make 1 Stitch)=pick up strand of yarn lying between last st worked and next st and work into back of it.
M3 (Make 3 Stitches)=(k1,p1,k1) all into next st.

P

p=purl
pm=place marker
psso (pass slipped stitch over)=This occurs after a slip stitch and regular stitch. Ex: k3, s1, k1, psso, k2. Knit 3 stitches, slip 1, knit 1, psso (lift slipped stitch over the knit 1 stitch and drop it off the needle), knit 2.

R

rep=repeat
rnd (s)=round (s)
RT (Right Twist)=on the right side, K2tog but leave both stitches on the left needle. Knit into the first stitch again. Slide both stitches off the left hand needle.

S

sl
(slip)=slip the next stitch onto the right-hand needle without knitting it.
sl1k
(slip 1 knitwise)=slip the next stitch onto the right-hand needle as if to knit.
sl1p
(slip 1 purlwise)=slip the next stitch onto the right-hand needle as if to purl.
skp
(slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over)=Slip the next st onto the right-hand needle. Knit the next st, then pass the slipped st over the knitted stitch.
sk2p
(slip, knit 2, pass slipped stitch over)=Slip the next st onto the right-hand needle. Knit the next 2 sts together, then pass the slipped st over the k2tog st.
sm=slip marker
ssk
(slip, slip, knit)= Slip the next 2 stitches knit-wise, one at a time, insert the left-hand needle through the front of both loops and knit them together.

wyib
(with yarn in back)=This term is used when the yarn is at the front of the work (after a PURL stitch has been performed) but has to be put to the back before the next action is performed.  Take the yarn from the front to back between the two needles.
wyif
(with yarn in front)=bring the yarn forward as if to perform a PURL stitch.
WS
=wrong side
w&t=wrap and turn

Y

yb (a.k.a wyib)
(yarn back)=This term is used when the yarn is at the front of the work (after a PURL stitch has been performed) but has to be put to the back before the next action is performed.  Take the yarn from the front to back between the two needles.
yf (a.k.a wyif)
(yarn forward)=bring the yarn forward as if to perform a PURL stitch.
yo
(yarn over)=wrap the yarn around the right-hand needle from back to front counterclockwise before knitting the next stitch. Then work the next stitch as normal.
