Irish Mesh Cowl

Hello!

Hope everyone is doing well. These past few days have been very cold here in the south with temps dipping below freezing. With the frigid weather, I went out last night after work and got some firewood to make a fire. It was the first one this season!

It was absolutely amazing. There’s nothing better than a crackling fire and some knitting to soothe away the tensions of the day.

Burning fire 2014

Speaking of knitting, last week I finished a cowl that I had been working on for the past couple of weeks. Those of you who have been keeping up with me via social media have seen the progress of this cowl and as promised, I am posting it up today.

This cowl, called the Irish Mesh Cowl, was knitted previously using Knit Picks’ Billow yarn in Tea Rose (shown below). I designed this cowl about six months ago and am now revisiting it and will share the pattern with you all.

Irish Mesh Cowl in Tea Rose - Purl Avenue

The revisited version is done Ash. Note: Knit Picks Billow yarn is cotton and the yarn weight varies even though it is listed as Bulky Weight. If you want your cowl to look a little more uniform, I recommend using a different type of yarn.

Billow in Ash

After blocking, the Irish Mesh Cowl in Ash measures about 30″ circumference and 11″ wide and is slightly smaller than the one in Tea Rose (I don’t remember the measurements).

2014 Spring Giveaway

Hi everyone!

Spring is a little over a week away and I don’t know about you but I am ready for Winter to be over with! So what better way to usher in the Spring season than with a fun giveaway. This 2014 Spring Giveaway will run for a week, just in time for Spring.

For this year’s Spring Giveaway, I’ve decided to use the popular Cascade Yarns Ultra Pima Cotton as the prize. I have used this yarn as a giveaway prize before (in different colors) and it was a big hit. I chose this yarn not only because it is a popular choice but also because it is cotton. Cotton is a great fiber to use for Spring knitting because it keeps you cool during warm days and warms you up on cool ones. It is also biodegradable, hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant.

I’ve chosen two skeins of Cascade Yarns Ultra Pima Cotton in trending Spring colors: mint green and coral. These would be perfect for any Spring knitwear!

A Striped Affair Infinity Scarf

Hello!

This winter has been crazy this year and as February comes to an end, many of us are anticipating spring. I am crossing my fingers for no more cold snaps! From here on and for the next couple of months or so, I will be knitting for the spring season.  To get myself in the right mindset, I bought myself some hydrangeas.

hydrangeas

These beauties are a perfect addition to my home. It’s amazing what a little plant can do to change the mood of a room. Hydrangeas are one of my favorite flowers along with snapdragons and orchids. I tend to favor exotic-type flowers over the traditional favorites such as roses and carnations.

With my new plant in place and a renewed positive energy throughout the home, it was time for me to finish my first spring project: A Striped Affair Infinity Scarf. It has been a couple of years since I designed my first infinity scarf, the Budding Infinity Scarf, and I am surprised that infinity scarves are still popular if not more popular than it was back then.

For this new scarf, I knew I wanted to knit something light and airy so I went with Patons Lace yarn. I decided to add stripes because I realized that I had not designed anything with stripes for Purl Avenue and plus, the nautical theme is really hot right now. The stripes were knitted using left over Lion Brand Cotton Ease Yarn. The different weights of yarn adds more texture to the scarf and gives it a unique look.

Striped Affair Infinity Scarf - Purl Avenue

The scarf design is simple so if you decide to not knit the stripes then you can do so by omitting the stripe section in the pattern and continue on with the Broken Rib Slip Stitch.

Striped Affair Infinity Scarf - Purl Avenue

Approximate measurements (after blocking): circumference: 51″ (130 cm) and 12″ (30 cm) wide.

I used about 2/3 skein of Patons Lace and 1/2 skein of Lion Brand Cotton Ease Yarn. If you are going to knit this with no stripes, I recommend getting 2 skeins of the lace yarn, just to be safe. Here is the pattern:

Materials

1 skein of Patons Lace Yarn

  • Color: Dove Grey
  • Approx: 455 m (498 yds)
  • 85 g (3 oz)
  • 80% acrylic/10% mohair/ 10% wool

1 skein of Lion Brand Cotton Ease Yarn

  • Color: Charcoal
  • 207 yds/188 m per skein
  • 3.5 oz/100 g per skein
  • 50% cotton/50% acrylic

US 8 (5mm) 32″ circular needles
Stitch marker
Yarn/tapestry needle

17 sts x 24 rows=4″
