Stockinette Elongated Stitch – in the round

Perfect for projects like cowls, the Stockinette Elongated Stitch pattern (circular knitting) creates a lightweight fabric with a beautiful drape. While true “dropped stitches” run vertically, this technique creates horizontal rows of elongated stitches by “dropping” extra yarn wraps as you work in the round.

Since this is based on a stockinette structure, the edges may still have a tendency to curl; a good blocking will help smooth out the fabric and show off the openwork.

Tips for Success

  • Consistency: Try to keep your tension even when dropping the wraps so your horizontal “ladder” looks uniform.
  • Variations: You can adjust the height of the elongated row by changing how many times you wrap the yarn in Round 1.
  • Edge Control: If you’re knitting a cowl, consider starting and ending with a few rounds of ribbing or garter stitch to prevent the stockinette curl.
